WiFi at Events: From slow to lightning fast!
The journey of WiFi for events has been nothing short of extraordinary. From 1Mbps ADSL connections in the early days to 10Gbps+ powerhouse networks of today, the evolution of WiFi and LAN technology has transformed how we experience and manage events.
Here’s a quick trip down memory lane:
The Early Days:
- 2.4 GHz only WiFi and much slower LAN speeds: When WiFi first emerged, devices required large external WiFi cards and could only connect at 2.4 GHz, slower speeds and more interference! Most devices still required a hardwired connection, and LAN speeds often were limited to 10Mbps.
- Limited capacity: More WiFi access points were required as capacities were much lower, and with only 3 non-overlapping channels, interference posed a real challenge.
- Limited redundancy: Whilst LAN hardware could still be run in HA mode with multiple routers and switches used to eliminate single points of failure, there were a lot less reliable backup internet options available.
- Slow internet speeds: Back when Noba first launched, internet options were much slower than we see today, and speeds of 1Mbps (and sometimes much less!) were commonplace. Technologies such as ADSL, high latency satellite broadband and 3g connections were seen as cutting edge. However, usage had to be monitored as very few connections offered unlimited data, and excess charges were eye-wateringly expensive!
Modern Marvels:
- Event-Grade WiFi: High-density, enterprise-grade WiFi capable of managing thousands of simultaneous users across far fewer access points.
- Predictive RF Design: Engineers now use sophisticated tools to design networks that ensure seamless coverage across vast spaces.
- Rapid install 10Gbps fibre and interference-free point-to-point internet connections: Fast, scalable, and secure internet connections for even the most remote locations with speeds over 1,000 faster than the early days often available.
- Network Monitoring: Real-time analytics allow engineers to monitor spikes in traffic, hardware issues and overall performance to ensure an always-on experience for the end user.
The Future:
- Private 5G and WiFi 7: Ultra-fast, low-latency networks designed for immersive experiences like AR/VR.
