As event connectivity specialists, noba were asked by IT experts Marathon PS to deliver the finish line Internet connectivity at the London Marathon 2016.
The Project Challenge
Due to the complexity of the location, we found the installation of a permanent Internet connection was not an option. Instead, we decided to implement a point to point solution to bring a 200 Mbps synchronous connection to the finish line area.
With multiple points of presence across London, we are never too far away from a fibre quality leased line service. However, there were the obstacles of St James’ Park and trees of over 30 metres high between us and our nearest connection. We also found that there was no suitable building to mount our point to point equipment on, so our comms team had to bring in a temporary mast solution.
After liaising with the various stakeholders, we arranged for the installation of a comms tower in Marlborough House Gardens. This allowed us to position our point to point radios above the tree line and connect the media centre to an enterprise grade 200 Mbps synchronous circuit.
The End Result
Whilst the project was not without its challenges, the end result was a faultless connection. The connectivity provided the various press and media teams with the ability to quickly and reliably upload hundreds of gigabytes of data over the London Marathon weekend.

The planning, install and integration of a robust and reliable Internet connection on The Mall is no easy task. The Internet connection needed to be fast enough to support the demands of 400 of the world’s press.Posted 19th May 2016
