The Project:

World Travel Market truly is home to the world’s travel trade, and this gathering of over 45,000 verified travel professionals represents the most influential meeting point in the travel and tourism calendar.

This is the third year Noba has worked with RX Global, providing consultancy services to the World Travel Market, and 2024 was the largest to date. WTM showcased around 4,000 exhibitors, including tourism boards, hoteliers, transport brands, technology services and world-class experiences.

RX Global runs over 400 events covering 43 sectors in 22 countries, in-person and online. Their events are diverse, inclusive, and impactful commercial experiences.

RX Global engaged Noba to work as a consultant to bridge the gap between the organiser and the venue IT team to help get a better understanding of the WiFi performance after receiving pressure from exhibitors and stakeholders to improve the service over a number of years. 

Our Solution:

  • Understanding in detail the current technical requirements for the event connectivity.
  • Examining the event layout and timings to work out the footfall flow and identify potential network load pinch points.
  • Analysis of the current Excel network topology and specification.
  • Advise on venue network suitability regarding the expected usage for WTM 2024.
  • Identify any quick wins from a technical perspective regarding WiFi infrastructure improvements that could be deployed in the time frame available.
  • Attend a live event at Excel before WTM to do some pre-show spectrum analysis while Excel’s system is under load to gain insight into performance under easier conditions.
  • Pre-show checks of network coverage.
  • WiFi and Spectrum analysis during live days.
  • Live scans during the event will be done across the site and in any reported areas.
  • Provide a detailed report of our findings, including any potential improvements for 2025.
  • Attend a wash-up meeting to review our report with the client.

Challenges:

Organising WiFi connectivity for a large exhibition on the scale of WTM can pose several challenges due to the sheer volume of users and devices in a confined space. 

High User Density:

Large exhibitions attract a significant number of attendees, leading to high user density in a limited area. This can strain the available bandwidth and usable WiFi Spectrum, resulting in slower connections for users.

Interference:

The presence of multiple WiFi networks and other electronic devices can cause interference, leading to signal degradation and decreased performance.

Signal Range and Dead Zones:

Ensuring consistent signal coverage across the entire exhibition space can be challenging. Dead zones, where the WiFi signal is weak or nonexistent, may arise in certain areas.

Bandwidth Demands:

Exhibitions often involve multimedia presentations, live streaming, and other high-bandwidth activities. Meeting the collective bandwidth demands of all users can be challenging.

Device Diversity:

A wide variety of devices with different capabilities and WiFi standards may be present, requiring compatibility and support for various protocols.

Security Concerns:

With a large number of users and devices connecting to the WiFi network, security becomes a critical concern. Protecting against unauthorised access, data breaches, and other security threats is essential.

Temporary Infrastructure:

Exhibitions are typically temporary events, and setting up a robust and scalable WiFi infrastructure for a short duration can be logistically challenging.

Cost Considerations:

Deploying a reliable WiFi network for a large exhibition can be expensive, and organisers need to balance the cost of infrastructure with the quality of service provided.

Network Management:

Efficiently managing the network, monitoring performance, and troubleshooting issues in real-time can be complex, especially with a dynamic environment and a large number of users.
